Windowsill Still Life: Daytime and Dusk — 9 x 12in, acrylic on canvas board, acrylic on bristol paper. 03/27/22.

These still lives are inspired by Impressionist works like the Haystack series and Rouen Cathedral series by Monet, and are meant to convey my understanding of the way lighting conditions change the colors, as well as the overall tone or mood, of a scene.

In addition to being an exploration of color and light, I also used these pieces to lean into a quicker, looser painting style. I spent much of this painting class frustrated and unsatisfied with the style of my pieces because they felt sloppy without being intentionally so; to finally accept and explore the sloppiness was cathartic, although I do feel like I can push this idea further still.

Grisaille Still Life — 9 x 12in, acrylic on gesso board, 04/18/22.

Moving in the opposite direction, I challenged myself to make this painting as neat and precise as I could — again, as an attempt to escape the pit of aimless mediocrity I'd fallen into for most of the semester. This is also the piece that introduced me to the grisaille technique of painting, and it was truly love at first sight.
